There have been reports in the press recently that doctors are recommending surfing lessons for young people with anxiety and depression.
Ask any surfer and they’ll tell you how good going surfing makes you feel. Not just riding waves but even sitting on your board whilst the madness on land continues is calming.
But it’s not just surfing that makes people feel good. All forms of exercise release hormones that make you feel good.
Combine that with feeling healthier week after week and it had to be asked why exercise isn’t on prescription for a wide variety of mental health issues, let alone physical health.
I’m not surprised it doesn’t happen often. Whilst I have had GP’s and plastic surgeons consult with me about physical issues, and refer private clients to me. There would no doubt be an uproar if NHS money were spent on exercise programmes…but it’s fine to waste billions of pounds on pills that merely mask problems.
It’s a cultural thing. People go to a doctor with an illness and expect to be prescribed drugs. Can you imagine the reaction of a morbidly obese person if, instead of being referred for a gastric by-pass, they were prescribed personal training 3 times per week for a year? They’d probably drop dead on the spot.
That’s part of my job, to educate people of all of the positive benefits of regular exercise.
If you’re reading this email then there’s a pretty decent chance that I’m preaching to the converted. But you are in the minority. Most people still don’t take the minimum amount of exercise required to promote good health.
If you’re still not getting enough exercise you can train at home with 10×10 Plus (http://www.10x10plus.co.uk/) . The workouts are only 10 minutes long, so NO-ONE can say they don’t have time. It’s just £20 until the end of the year.
Or come down to Devon and I’ll take you surfing…it’s a bit cold out there in the Atlantic ocean, but you’ll get used to it 🙂
